Instead, it’s encouraging businesses to commit publicly to three practical measures: stronger board accountability, participation in the NCSC’s Early Warning service, and a more robust approach to Cyber Essentials throughout their supply chains. Not because it’s another badge to add to the website, but because it reflects the direction cyber security has been moving for some time. Cyber resilience is no longer just a technical issue. Boards are increasingly expected to understand cyber risk in the same way they understand financial, operational and regulatory risk. The pledge places that responsibility firmly at leadership level through adoption of the Cyber Governance Code of Practice and board training. But perhaps the most significant part of the pledge is its focus on supply chains. Organisations are encouraged to understand where Cyber Essentials is already in place across their suppliers, identify gaps, and take a risk-based approach to requiring certification going forward.
For businesses that haven’t yet achieved Cyber Essentials, this should be seen as more than good housekeeping. Increasingly, it’s becoming part of the conversation organisations are having with customers, partners and procurement teams.
We’ve signed the pledge because we believe these are practical, achievable measures that genuinely improve resilience. The question is: have you?
