Matt Carney’s Journey, both Sides of a Cyber Incident Response Plan (CIRP)

In January 2024, Matt joined the Evolve North team as a Senior Information Governance Consultant, bringing with him a wealth of experience from the global transportation sector. His transition to cybersecurity consultancy underscores his adaptability and expertise in tackling complex challenges.

In his previous role, Matt specialised in securing electronic networks for clients ranging from entertainment giants to consumer electronics leaders. Navigating International regulations, such as GDPR compliance with European customers, and the intricate nature of safeguarding digital assets in today’s interconnected world.

Matt’s foresight into anticipating cyber threats led him to focus on preparing comprehensive responses that extended beyond just the IT department. Spearheading initiatives for the wider organisation in the event of a breach, a Cyber Incident Response Plan (CIRP) was the logical approach, to highlight scale and impact:

How would finance pay if it had to be in bitcoin?

As a company would we pay a ransom?

Realising the need for external collaboration, Matt reached out to Evolve North’s Mark Dennis. Together, they forged partnership to design, build and test a tailored CIRP.  Matt was particularly impressed by Evolve North’s hands-on approach, which involved conducting in-person sessions with department heads to foster engagement and accountability.

One memorable instance involved a tabletop exercise where departmental heads simulated a ransomware attack scenario. Through this exercise, they identified gaps in their response protocols and developed actionable strategies to mitigate risks. Matt found this practical approach invaluable in bridging the gap between theoretical knowledge and real-world application.

Today, Matt plays a pivotal role in Evolve North’s mission to empower organisations with resilient cybersecurity CIRP plans. Drawing from his extensive experience in both private and public sectors, having also worked for many years within the NHS, Matt can easily identify the overarching business needs of each customer.

Matt say’s:

Cybersecurity isn’t just about technology; it’s about preparing for the unexpected and mitigating risks effectively.

As a whole business approach to champion cybersecurity with a robust plan in place for every eventuality.”
